Kitchen Ukrainian Style Masterclass Vol 3 Deruny Masterclass in Haapsalu

We invite you to join the third meeting of the “Kitchen Ukrainian Style” series, dedicated to one of the most well-known dishes of Ukrainian cuisine potato pancakes also known as deruny (деруни in Ukrainian).

What makes Ukrainian deruny special?

Unlike many other types of potato pancakes, the potatoes for Ukrainian deruny are grated very finely. This gives them a smooth texture, a beautiful round shape, and a pleasantly crispy crust without any noticeable potato pieces inside. It is a true national dish. In the Ukrainian city of Korosten, a large annual deruny festival is held in honor of potato pancakes. The festival takes place in September in Drevliany Park, where visitors can taste potato pancakes prepared according to recipes from different regions.

Food, traditions and language practice

The goal of our meetings is to preserve and share national traditions, enriching the Haapsalu community. In addition to cooking together, this is a great opportunity to practice Estonian and communicate in a relaxed atmosphere. Our motto is “Learning to communicate in Estonian”, where language practice happens naturally and in a fun way through creative activities and cooking.

The event is organised within the framework of the project “Support for Integration and Adaptation in Haapsalu”. The aim of the project is to provide effective integration and adaptation services for adults aged 18 and over, including newcomers, people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and returnees, supporting community cohesion and mutual understanding.
