Discover the Ancient Art of Card Weaving: A Workshop in Haapsalu

The Western Estonia Ingrian Finnish Society invites you to learn the centuries-old art of card weaving. Come and learn the timeless craft of card weaving, a skill that brings together tradition, durability and beauty.
Quality that lasts for centuries
Legend says that the quality of these woven belts was measured in a unique way back in the Viking Age. A proper belt had to be strong enough to hold a horse. In this workshop, you will learn to make exactly that kind of dense and unbreakable band. Card weaving uses small square cards to create patterns. By rotating these cards, you produce a weave that is significantly stronger than regular woven fabric. A belt made with this ancient technique is perfect for traditional folk costumes or as a stylish everyday accessory.
Learn from a master of the craft
The workshop is led by Aili Tervonen. She is a teacher at the Haapsalu Vocational Education Centre, holds a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science, and is the author of the handbook “Kangad” (Fabrics). Aili combines practical skills with deep knowledge of materials, helping you understand why high-quality craftsmanship lasts for generations. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from a recognized master and a true expert in her field.
